The Matrix Rewarded

The University of Teesside’s Careers Service has earned national accreditation for the quality of its work.

The University of Teesside’s Careers Service has earned national accreditation for the quality of its work.

Based in the University’s Department of Student Services, the Careers Service was successful in meeting the assessment criteria of the Government backed new Matrix national quality standard for information, advice and guidance. The 10-element Matrix sets standards for the quality of service and assesses the effectiveness of delivery, management and planning of all organisations giving advice and guidance. Teesside’s Careers Service is managed by Senior Careers Adviser Bill Greenwood.

Emma Dyson, University of Teesside Careers Adviser, said: “ An assessor spent three days at the University looking at every aspect of the way we work. He spoke to around 60 students, employers and academic staff who had used the service to get their opinions about what we do. It’s a very stringent quality assessment procedure and we are only the eleventh Higher Education Careers Service to be accredited under the new standard and only the second of the ‘new’ universities to earn it.

“It simply means that our students know they can trust the information and guidance we offer them. The graduate labour market is competitive and it is important that students get the right help to achieve the career they want. Many of the students who come through our doors have gone on to get really good jobs, sometimes in areas they may never have thought of without coming to us first.”

The Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, to which all university careers services belong, intends to make the new Matrix national quality standard essential for all universities in the UK.
