Who wants to be an entrepreneur?

17 February 2004

The role of entrepreneurs will come under the spotlight in a free lecture at the University of Teesside on Wednesday 3 March at 6.30pm. Entitled ‘Is entrepreneurship social foresight?’, the lecture will be delivered by Ted Fuller, the University’s Professor of Entrepreneurship and Strategic Foresight, in the Europa Building, Woodlands Road, Middlesbrough. Refreshments will be available from 6pm.

Professor Fuller joined the University’s Teesside Business School in 2002. He followed an unconventional route towards his Professorship. At the age of 19 Professor Fuller joined his father as founder and Co-Director of a manufacturing business, and started his academic career 10 years later.

Professor Fuller said: “Running a business was an invaluable experience. I know the problems, tensions and opportunities that arise from this situation, and it helps me to bridge the gap between being an entrepreneur and an academic.

“The main theme of this lecture is that enterprise is considered by many to be fundamental to economic and social progress, and therefore that all enterprising acts shape the future of society. The moral and ethical framework society grants for enterprising acts, sets the conditions for society's future. The lecture connects the changing meaning of entrepreneurship in social and political thought to the way that society is changing, and draws implications for education, public services and business.”

The lecture will be of particular interest to academics, economic development policy makers, entrepreneurs (business, social and civic), voluntary organisations, think tanks, and local authorities.
