Teesside takes first place

01 April 2004

A truly global team of four University of Teesside students have come first in an annual quiz organised by the British Computer Society (BCS), the industry body for IT professionals.

Students Dirk Budke, BSc (Hons) Computer Studies (from Hanover, Germany), James Decraëne, BSc (Hons) Computer Science (from Reims, France), Vasanth Manickam BSc (Hons) Computer Studies (from Mysore, India) and team captain Brian Bailey, HND Computing (from Northumberland, UK) took part in Computer Challenge 2004 quiz, organised by the BCS’s West Yorkshire Branch.

The team beat Bradford University in the final of the quiz, which tested their knowledge about all areas of computing, including significant dates, development methods, programming languages and industry personalities. With the final score being 34-14, it was a decisive win for the Teesside team.

Alan Jones, Principal Lecturer at the School of Computing and Secretary of the BCS on Teesside, said: “I’m really pleased for the team as they have worked very hard. It shows how strong their understanding of all areas of computing is and I think it is also a great testament to our teaching standards. The BCS banner is good to have; it introduces students to the range and interest of activities promoted by the Professional Society.”

The winning team received a team shield and each member won a £40 book token.
