Over 100 Teesside teenagers will be waved off by the Mayor of Middlesbrough Councillor Kath Bevington as they set off to Southampton for the British Athletics Association Millennium Youth Games National Grand Final, the climax of the Millennium Youth Games and billed as the biggest youth sport event in the world. The finals run from 17-20 August.

The teenagers aged 13-15, competing as Teesside Sport Team are the first team from the Teesside Sport Partnership and a combination of the winning teams from the Ambassador Windows Teesside Millennium Youth games. The sports are tennis, football, girl’s rugby, netball, hockey, swimming, basketball and athletics.

Jean Lordon, Active Sports Manager for Teesside Sport based at the University of Teesside is the Team Manager. She said: “Over 7,000 young people – champions of the 43 area games – will be competing in the finals. It will be an exciting, action packed schedule of sports competition and entertainment, with an Opening Ceremony on Friday.”
