University appeal for Nightstop Teesside

17 December 2004

The number of homeless families in England has topped 100,000 for the first time. The University of Teesside is helping to combat this increasing problem by launching a Christmas campaign for Nightstop Teesside, which provides support for homeless young people, aged 16-25.

The campaign asked staff and students to donate gifts and toiletries to Nightstop Teesside for the Christmas period. They will be collected at 3pm on Monday 20 December by Ruth Manual, Manager of Nightstop Teesside, and handed over by Jayne Villiers, the University’s Volunteer Co-ordinator.

Jayne Villiers said: "Nightstop recently gave a presentation about their work here at the University. It was heartbreaking to see the situations that some young people find themselves in and the difficulties they face when becoming homeless. The response by both staff and students in supporting this local organisation has been fantastic."

Ruth Manual said: “We are overwhelmed by the response from the University of Teesside, it’s amazing. I think people are more aware and concerned about homelessness, it’s there every day, but they’re more responsive at Christmas. A huge thank you to all!”
