It's a numbers game for Wendy

16 August 2000

Wendy Mackellow really does have a head for figures. For the 22-year-old from Guisborough has landed a job as a Credit Risk Analyst with GE Capital Global Consumer Finance Ltd thanks to the University of Teesside's BSc (Hons) Mathematics course.

As part of the four-year course Wendy undertook a year long placement with the Leeds-based arm of the American company before returning to the Teesside to complete her degree.

Wendy started her degree studies at Sheffield University but two months in to the course left to come to Teesside. She said: "The course at Sheffield was almost pure maths with no year out in placement. Switching to Teesside worked out so much better for me. In addition to maths I studied operational research, business computing and programming which I think have made me more employable. These skills proved invaluable in my placement year when I managed five company portfolios and undertook statistical analysis and research."

Wendy is the first student to have been placed with GE Capital Ltd. The company was so impressed they sponsored Wendy's final year studies and four days after sitting her last exam she started work.

She said: "My last exam was on a Wednesday and I started work the following Monday. Maths has always been a particularly favourite subject of mine but I wasn't really too sure about what type of career I wanted to pursue with my degree. I really believe that the placement year coupled with maths being taught as an applied subject at Teesside opened up a great opportunity for me, I'm glad I moved back home."
