Digital Fellows spawn new companies

07 April 2005

Nine new companies are being set up by graduates who have taken advantage of a Digital Fellowship scheme, part of the DigitalCity project at the University of Teesside.

Among them is Animmersion Ltd, launched by Sam Harrison. He worked with Teesside's Virtual Reality Centre for three years and won praise for his virtual reality fly-through of the new design for the Gulbenkian Theatre, Northern Stage, Newcastle. Sam is a graduate of the University of Teesside's Visualisation degree and set his new enterprise at the end of last year.

Other new graduate companies being launched with the help of DigitalCity in recent months include moShine - recently awarded a contract to overhaul the computer graphics for the American Chart Show - and Rusted Films, who produce short computer generated films.

They and the other representatives from the new graduate companies will be showing off their digital expertise at this year's DigitalCity Fellowship exhibition, from 10am to 4pm on Tuesday 12 April and Wednesday 13 April in the University's Centre for Enterprise, Victoria Road, Middlesbrough.

This year for the first time a guest lecture is being organised as part of the DigitalCity Fellowship event. This will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday 12 April in the University's Europa building (access from Woodlands Road, Middlesbrough) and will be delivered by computer artist William Latham.

William has been a leading figure in computer animation since the 1980s and helped the then Teesside Polytechnic launch its award-winning Masters degree in computer graphics. He will speak on 'Mutator Art and Computer Games'. The lecture is free and open to the public.

At 6.30pm on the same day in the Centre for Enterprise, Helen Gresty, Head of Nations, at the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts (NESTA) will be presenting this year's DigitalCity Fellowship awards. There are four categories for the awards.

The four categories for the DigitalCity awards are:-

Most promising business idea, sponsored by Ward Hadaway Most innovative project, [artwork or software], sponsored by Codeworks Best animated short film, sponsored by Middlesbrough Council Most outstanding project overall, sponsored by DigitalCity
