A full taste of university life at Teesside

More than 400 young people from across the UK have enjoyed a full taste of student life in a series of summer schools at the University of Teesside.

The University held several summer schools for pupils from Years 10 (14 – 15 year olds) and 11 (15 – 16 year olds). They took part in workshops and lived in halls of residence for the full student experience. In addition, two science summer schools and a digital arts and media summer school were held for young people with a specific interest in these subjects.

The summer schools are organised and managed by the University’s award winning School and Colleges Liaison Team.

Pupils had access to the state-of-the-art equipment and taught by lecturers and technical staff. Student mentors were on hand to assist them during their stay on campus and offer advice and guidance about University life.

Christina Pacitto, 15, from Our Lady and St. Bede’s School in Stockton attended the Science Summer School. She took part in a challenge to build a 12th scale ‘bailey bridge’ using a genuine World War Two army engineering kit.

Christina said: “The summer school was really good. The bridge building was a bit frustrating though because you had to take it apart if you got the pieces wrong. The University is really nice and modern. It was a fun day and I enjoyed staying over.”
