University offers journalism degree for the future

28 June 2007

The University of Teesside is to offer an entirely new degree, designed to meet the needs of the current news industry, by combining the skills of traditional journalism with multimedia production.

The BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism Professional Practice gives students the opportunity to graduate with both an academic and a professional qualification. Graduates will have accreditation to go directly into a career in journalism, as well as the specialist skills needed to work in today’s multimedia newsrooms. Modern newspaper and online news practice will be the focus of the degree.

The degree has been accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) and approved by Trinity Mirror, Britain's biggest regional newspaper publisher. It also offers work experience opportunities in today's multimedia newsrooms.

Joanne Butcher, Chief Executive of the NCTJ said: “I am hugely impressed by the University’s new degree. It is a very innovative course and has strong links with local employers. There is a real genuine understanding about how the media industry is changing and how this impacts on journalism skills. The Multi-Media approach is how the industry is developing. The knowledge and strong partnership that I see here works together.

“The degree is innovative as it combines the traditional skills of journalism, for example the depth of media law, with the developing new skills which are required across all media platforms, such as video journalism. It’s quite exciting to see a provider like the University leading the way in these new developments.”

Future students will acquire industry-specific skills in a multi-million pound purpose-built convergent newsroom, part of the University's new Athena Building on Woodlands Road, Middlesbrough. The Athena is due to open in autumn this year.
