Cactal Artist gives public talk

11 October 2007

Simeon Nelson, whose Cactal steel sculpture now adorns the Woodlands Road end of the University of Teesside’s new Phoenix Building, will be giving a public talk about his work in the University’s Innovation Centre Lecture Theatre, on Tuesday 23 October 2007 at 5.00pm.

The event is free and open to students and members of the public.

Simeon’s 5-ton ‘floating sculptural from’ emerges out of the street façade of the new building, which is home to the Institute of Digital Innovation and the exciting DigitalCity project.

Simeon says: “Cactal is based on a digital organism. What the students and public will see high up on the facade of the Institute’s building is a process of self-generation that has been frozen at a particular moment.”

Cactal is the latest in a series of works by Simeon Nelson that addresses the historic relationship between sculpture, ornament and architecture.
