Fuel crisis and the new academic year

15 September 2000

The University of Teesside’s Open Day on Wednesday 13 September was hit by the fuel crisis with the number of expected visitors down by half – from 2,500 to 1,250.

Many people who had registered to attend the event in Middlesbrough were put off by the risk of running dry – and the University has now planned a second open day on Wednesday October 25, from 1.30 to 4.30pm.

Despite the difficulties, some travelled from as far as the Isle of Wight and Sussex to attend. For further details of the second open day please ring Pat White or Sharon Young on 01642 342275.

Meanwhile the University is expecting well over 2,500 new full-time first year students this weekend and contingency plans are being made for those unsure about whether to travel.

The petrol crisis is easing, and the University is confident that most new arrivals will arrive as planned.

However, the Academic Registry will be monitoring the situation over the weekend and will report on Monday – the start of Freshers’ Week – on whether alternative induction-style events may be required for those put off travelling until the fuel supplies improve.

The Student Centre is remaining open over the weekend and updated messages will be left on the main switchboard.

If students are unable to get to the University over the weekend could they please call the University’s Student Services Department on 01642 342277 on Sunday or early next week. The Department is responsibility for student accommodation. The Student Centre will be open on Sunday from 9am to 6pm and can also be contacted during office hours next week.
