University scholarship aims to keep talent on Teesside

24 October 2007

Three top-performing local students at the University of Teesside have been rewarded for their hard work thanks to a scholarship established in conjunction with HSBC.

Robert Bowstead, 19, from Middlesbrough, Claire Wilson, 22 from Middlesbrough and Katy Milner, 20, from Stokesley were each presented with the £1000 scholarships by Allan Wilkinson, Regional Commercial Director at HSBC.

The scholarships were awarded to the three top-performing first-year full-time undergraduate Business School students who attended a local school or college and live in the region.

The scholarships aim to encourage talented local young people to study in the region and develop business enterprise skills that may ultimately contribute to the development of the local economy.

Helen Bussell, Acting Assistant Dean (Marketing & Recruitment) at the University’s Business School said: “Claire, Robert and Katy were selected for the outstanding work they produced during their first year at the University and they fully deserve these scholarships. The University is working hard to encourage local students to be educated and work locally, something which the HSBC recognise and we appreciate their support.”

Allan Wilkinson, Regional Commercial Director with HSBC said: “As a local lad myself, it gives me a great deal of pleasure to present these scholarships to Robert, Claire and Katy. HSBC are the world’s local bank, covering 84 countries and employing 315,000 staff. But we’re very proud of our links with the local community. All three students are from the local area, and it’s great that they’re benefiting from staying in the area and being educated here. Hopefully they will also choose to work in the area, which can only have a positive impact on the local economy.”
