University welcomes internationally acclaimed poet

27 May 2008

Internationally acclaimed Australian poet Les Murray will be speaking about his work in a free lecture at the University of Teesside.

Les, who grew up on a dairy farm in New South Wales, has won many literary awards including the prestigious TS Eliot Prize for Poetry in 1996 and the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry in 1999.

He will be reading and talking about his work in the Innovation Centre Lecture Theatre on Friday 6 June at 5.30pm. The Innovation Centre is located on Stephenson Street, Middlesbrough.

Students and staff from the MA Creative Writing course will also be reading and discussing his work at the event.

Creative writing tutor Bob Beagrie, who helped to organise the event, said: 'It is very exciting to have such a world class poet reading at the University and offering advice and inspiration to our creative writing students. It will be particularly valuable for students who will support Les Murray at the event by reading from their own work

'This free event shows a big commitment on the part of the University to provide students with the opportunity to experience the very best of contemporary literature.'

Although the event is free, places are limited and must be booked by emailing matthew.barker@tees.ac.uk or 01642 384072.
