Judge delivers verdict on the justice system

19 March 2009

Judge Peter Fox QC gave a thought-provoking lecture at the University.

The Senior Circuit Judge and Recorder of Middlesbrough, who was awarded an honorary doctorate in law from the University in 2003, talked about current threats to the independence of the legal profession.

Judge Fox examined his chosen subject from the perspective of the judiciary, the Bar, the Law Society and the public interest, questioning whether recent and present changes in public funding of criminal, civil and family law cases help or hinder the course of justice.

He considered whether the law has become too complex or academic for the public good or even for the lawyers to understand.

This event was part of the our 2008-09 Honorary and Professorial Public Lecture Series.
