Sporting students strike gold, silver and bronze

Our elite athletes are celebrating after winning a string of medals at a prestigious competition.

The British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Rowing Regatta and Outdoor Athletics Championships took place during the first weekend in May.

And our students were the stars of the show, picking up five gold medals, one silver and one bronze.

Chris Body, BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise (Applied Sport Science), Bob Hewitt, BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise (Applied Sport Science), Ben Rowe, BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy and Chris Black, BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise (Applied Sport Science), won both the Lightweight Championship Four and the Lightweight Championship Quad.

Chris Black also won gold in the Lightweight Intermediate Single Scull.

In athletics Jonathan Taylor, BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise (Applied Sport Science), retained his title in the 1,500m and Ade Babatunde, BSc (Hons) Food, Nutrition and Health Science, jumped a personal best of 14.96m in the triple jump.

Highlighting University’s exceptional talent Matthew Wright, Sports Development Officer at the University, said: ‘This is a fantastic performance from our student athletes to win so many medals on a national stage.

‘It is great to see the hard work and dedication they all put in to training and preparing is paying off. These results highlight the exceptional talent at the University and I’m sure their success will continue in the future.’
