Outstanding students honoured at annual ceremony

Hundreds of people attended a lavish ceremony to recognise the efforts of our student sportsmen, women, volunteers and groups.

The 20th annual Students’ Union Awards Dinner was held at Tall Trees Hotel, in Yarm.

Over 400 students and specially invited guests attended the event and awards where presented by Vice Chancellor Professor Graham Henderson and Deputy Vice Chancellor (Learning & Student Experience) Caroline Macdonald.

A total of 22 awards were presented, with the coveted Club of the Year Shield presented to Women’s Football. John Mothersdale, LLB (Hons) Law, was named Volunteer of the Year for his tireless work raising funds for charity, chairing the Law and Mooting Society and helping to run some of the Students’ Union’s biggest events.

The Men’s Football Fourth Team where named Team of the Year, while athletes Ben Rowe, BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy and Stacey Smith, BSc (Hons) Sports Therapy, picked up Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year.

In the newly introduced Male and Female Sports Personality of the Year categories Men’s Football Captain Nick Hamblin and Netball Chair Joanne Wilson triumphed. Cheerleading and Short Animation collected the respective Most Improved Club and Most Improved Society awards.

Showing talent and dedication Nat Broom, Student Activities Officer at the Students’ Union, said: ‘There was a superb atmosphere on the night, as these awards mean so much to individuals and clubs.

‘I want to congratulate all the winners and indeed the nominees for their contribution and achievements over the past year.

‘It was an incredibly tough choice in all the contested categories, underlining the talent and dedication we have amongst the students at Teesside.’
