Ahmed's international forensics phone-in

04 August 2009

Forensics lecturer Dr Ahmed Mohameden will have a far larger audience than a lecture theatre of students next week.

For he will be appearing on the satellite channel Al-Hiwar, speaking to thousands of viewers across the UK, Europe and the Middle East about careers in forensic science.

Ahmed, 41, lives in Ingleby Barwick and has worked as Senior Lecturer in Forensics at the University for three years.

He is originally from Mauritania in North Africa and later lived in Grenoble, France before coming to the UK to study for a PhD in London.

Ahmed worked for a London University and then moved to the Ministry of Defence (MOD). He was based at their Royal School of Military Engineering in Kent and involved in design and education around power sources. After four years with the MOD, he moved to Teesside.

Al-Hiwar are based in London, with a YouTube connection and described as a general entertainment channel, with news, sport and drama.

Ahmed was invited to speak on the Arabic speaking channel following an earlier appearance where he spoke on general issues. On Monday 10 August at 12 noon Ahmed will appear live on a daily programme "Likull-Al-Arab", which translates as ‘For All The Arabs’, speaking about careers in forensic science and taking phone questions from interested international viewers. The programme will be repeated 1:00am and 07:00am on the following day, Tuesday 11 August.

Consider studying forensics at Teesside Ahmed said: 'I’d like to encourage and inspire viewers to consider studying forensics, at Teesside of course! I want to do justice to the programmes we offer here, to our calibre of staff and facilities.

'Forensic science is not necessarily widely understood among laymen in the Arab community so I’m looking forward to this opportunity to introduce the topic. I’ll be referring to examples here at the University and hope the young people watching will consider forensic science as a potential career. It’s a good alternative to think about.'
