The BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise (Applied Sports Science) student beat defending champion Andy Baddeley and favourite to win, European Cross Country silver medallist Mo Farah.
Ricky, 21, who is supported by the University’s Elite Athlete Bursary Scheme and is a member of New Marske Harriers, raced home to finish the 4km race in freezing conditions at Holyrood Park in 13 minutes 20 seconds.
Speaking of his win Ricky said: 'It is a massive confidence booster. Some of the best athletes in the world were in the race, so to come up against them, and beat them is obviously a fantastic feeling.'
Ricky is due to go to New York at the end of January to compete, before heading home to run the National Cross Country Championships and defend his British University indoor 3,000 metre title.
