Futsal team continue sporting triumphs

18 March 2010

Teesside’s futsal team have plenty to celebrate after being crowned British University Champions.

They clinched the title at the BUCS Futsal Championship finals, which took place in Sheffield from 10 – 14 March.

But they left it late against defending champions UWE Hartpury – scoring the winning goal with just 30 seconds of extra time remaining to seal a 2-1 victory.

The success of the futsal team continues the University’s winning streak. Elite athletes Ricky Stevenson and Jonathan Taylor recently clinched gold medals at the BUCS Indoor Championships and the Students’ Union netball team won their league title at the beginning of March.

It has been four years since Teesside has won the BUCS Futsal Championship and a highlight of this year’s tournament was an 8-0 win over Bath.

Showing the signs of a top team Coach Damon Shaw was delighted with how his team performed.

He said: ‘We played some excellent stuff at times and it all came together at the right moment.

‘The final was a solid performance. We got it right tactically and were patient. We knew that we could score in the final minutes as we’ve done it so often already this season. It’s the sign of a top team.

‘We’ve proven that, with the right preparation and excellent team spirit, great things can be achieved.’
