How we built the Angel

22 March 2010

Teesside University is presenting in conjunction with Arts Council North East a series of lectures looking at public art.

Dr Mike White and Anna Pepperall will provide the inaugural lecture, How we Built the Angel, on Wednesday 24 March at Teesside University, in Room H0.03, Centuria Building, from 6.30 pm to 7.45pm. Refreshments are available from 6.00pm

The Arts Council North East is supporting the lecture as part of the Temenos Education Programme being led by the University. Art structure Temenos combines the aesthetic vision of artist Anish Kapoor with the engineering prowess of Cecil Balmond to create a world class artwork for the Tees Valley at the centre of the ambitious regeneration programme for Middlehaven, Middlesbrough. Temenos is an example of the excellence, innovation, and engagement which is at the heart of Arts Council England's Great Art for Everyone plan and through the partnership with Teesside University's Meteor Programme, hundreds of young people have taken part in design workshop to gain a greater understanding of Temenos and be inspired about art and engineering.

Dr Mike White currently works part time in the Centre for Medical Humanities at Durham University. He undertakes multi-sector workforce development programmes in arts in health to support community-based projects, as well as reducing evaluations, audits and literacy reviews of arts in health.

He was previously at Gateshead Council where he developed many arts in health and arts for older people projects as well as public art commissions such as the landmark Angel of the North by Anthony Gormley.

Anna Pepperall has worked for more than twenty years as Public Art Curator for Gateshead Council where she has commissioned a considerable number of public art projects, including the Angel of the North.
