Make mine a treble

26 March 2010

The University’s women’s football team are celebrating after winning the treble in a remarkable season.

They beat York St John University 2-0 on 24 March to clinch the British Universities League title.

It’s the third piece of silverware of the season for the team who won the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Northern Conference Cup earlier in March and have finished top of their Sunday league as well.

Louise Langton, Captain of the women’s football team, said: ‘It’s the perfect end to the perfect season and I’m so proud of every single player. You don’t win multiple trophies without having a group of people who have talent, dedication and a fantastic attitude - we’re blessed with all of that in abundance in this squad.

‘I would also like to say thank you to our coach Jamie Rice for all his work helping us to develop into such a successful side - there’s no way we would have achieved what we have without him.’

Out of this world Nat Broom, Student Activities Officer, added: ‘The team have done Teesside and, more importantly, themselves proud. To win one trophy is a huge achievement to win three is out of this world and I can’t praise them enough for how well they’ve played and the superb results they’ve achieved.

‘We’ve now seen no fewer than four of our teams win major British Universities leagues or championships this season and I think this latest success underlines the strength in depth across a number of sports.’
