Wanted: mentors to inspire undergraduates

25 June 2010

WE are seeking volunteer mentors from local science and engineering firms to share their expertise with undergraduate students.

Potential mentors need to be working at a supervisory level within local companies and be able to spare up to eight hours per academic year (October to May) to meet or communicate with students from the School of Science & Engineering on a one-to one basis.

The scheme is co-ordinated by Angela Waldock, the School’s student placements officer. Angela is a chemical engineering graduate who worked for ICI before becoming a lecturer in further and higher education.

Be supportive and encourage ‘self discovery’ in others She said: 'We’re looking for industry professionals to share their wisdom and guidance, individuals who have the ability and time to be supportive and encourage ‘self discovery’ in others.

'Communication between mentor and mentee is expected to take place no more than once a month unless mutually agreed otherwise throughout the academic year.

'The kinds of things we’re looking for from our mentors are help with CV development, support and guidance on a range of job related skills and advice about possible career paths. I’m really keen to hear from any firm based in the Tees Valley. It’s a chance for industrialists to meet our enthusiastic undergraduates and make a positive difference by supporting and encouraging their development.

'By working as a mentor, individuals can also enliven their own careers; build on their current skills set, gain volunteering experience that looks good on a CV and gain a sense of satisfaction from passing on their knowledge and experience. It also provides an opportunity to form links with the University’s own academic staff.'
