Alex impresses with his BIG IDEA

20 January 2011

A creative first year student has certainly made a big impression by scooping first prize in a competition designed to promote entrepreneurship.

Alex Davies, who is studying BA (Hons) Product Design, was handed a £500 cheque after winning the first challenge of the BIG IDEA series for his Fazor – a new kind of razor which eliminates the metal edge and replaces it with a green laser beam, meaning it is a life-long product that does not have to be replaced.

The competition sought ideas to solve a problem or make money. Alex now plans to use his winnings to help develop his product further.

The BIG IDEA competition is a series of challenges launched as part of entrepreneurs@tees, a new initiative designed to promote and celebrate entrepreneurship among students, alumni and staff and create a network to develop ideas, share expertise and knowledge.

An excellent competition Reflecting on his win, Alex, 22, who is originally from Surrey, said: ‘I think this was an excellent competition to get involved with. It feels really, really good to have won and hopefully there is more to come.

‘Developing your own idea is very important, it makes you stand out from the crowd, it makes you believe in yourself, gives you confidence and develops your personal ambitions further.’

Sharon Paterson, Assistant Dean for Curriculum Development and Educational Partnerships in the School of Arts & Media, added: ‘Many congratulations to Alex – he is definitely a worthy winner.

‘It is great to see the imagination and innovation that flourishes among students and colleagues recognised in this way.’

Challenge two of the BIG IDEA series is now open and requires ideas about setting up a social enterprise.
