Darlington display for Teesside University artist

14 February 2011

Watercolour paintings by a Teesside University fine art lecturer can be viewed in an exhibition in Darlington.

Lesley Hicks, a Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Teesside University, is exhibiting her work in the University’s Fairway premises, off Yarm Road, Darlington, from Thursday 17 February to Thursday 24 February.

The exhibition, entitled Travel Paintings, is open to the public.

Lesley said of her artwork: 'I use painting as a means of documenting travel and the encounter of ‘place’. I often seek out unconventional viewpoints and subjects which gently challenge traditional notions of the picturesque.

'Recent subjects have included petrol stations, rooftops with satellite dishes, domestic dwellings, car-parks, hotel rooms, waste ground and campsites - subjects which document my travels, but also subtly question notions of beauty.'

Among Lesley’s current students are those just embarking on a 15-week UCPD (University Certificate in Professional Development) Drawing and Approaches to Drawing course, which started this month at The Fairway.

Future intake of the UCPD course will be at the University’s brand new £13m five storey campus which is due to open in Darlington this summer alongside Darlington College at Central Park, Haughton Road.
