Sports stars put school children through their paces

18 March 2011

An Olympic medallist and a rising young sports star will both inspire young visitors to Teesside University.

Alison Mowbray and elite athlete Imran Rashid will welcome children in Year 8 from schools across the Tees Valley to a Sport and Nutrition event at the University on Wednesday 23 March.

Alison will launch the event with an inspirational lecture for the visiting students and talk about the vast range of people who all played a vital role in her success, from coaches to sports physiologists and nutritionists. She will also run a series of sports sessions with the young visitors.

Alison competed with the British Rowing team in two Olympic Games, Sydney in 2000 and Athens in 2004, where she won Silver.

Imran, a BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise (Applied Exercise Science) student supported by the University’s Elite Athlete Bursary Scheme, will also run a series of sports sessions during the event.

The 21-year-old plays for Middlesbrough Futsal Club, winners of the Northern FA Futsal League. He is also a member of the University Futsal team, which won the British Universities and Colleges Sport Indoor Championship.

Other activities include a health and nutrition workshop, where the children will learn about the nutritional value of different foods and a tour of the University’s biomechanics laboratory, where they can play a virtual exercise game.

Visiting schools include Ormesby, Macmillan, Nunthorpe and Oakfields in Middlesbrough, Bydales in Marske, Freebrough in Brotton, Grangefield in Stockton and Laurence Jackson in Guisborough.

The event is part of the University’s Meteor programme. The University’s award-winning Meteor programme, which launched in 1999, aims to inspire primary and secondary school children to think about higher education.
