Adele inspires creative Teesside students

27 April 2011

Author Adele Parks met creative students and fledgling writers during a visit to Teesside University.

Ahead of giving an Audience With public lecture at the University, Adele announced the winner of a competition she had set for students to create a book trailer for her latest novel and also launched a short story competition for creative writing students.

Adele had invited BA (Hons) Television and Film Production students to create a book trailer ahead of the launch of her eleventh novel, About Last Night, which tells the story of two women whose friendship is pushed to the limits by dramatic events.

The winning entry, by students Tom Anstiss, Ben Harker, James Carr and Saabik Akhthar, was unveiled at Adele’s Audience With public lecture, From Cinderella to Bestseller.

Tom said: ‘The concept behind our trailer was to use simplicity and symbolism to portray the story instead of actors, as people create their own ideas of what characters in books look like.’

The book trailer will be seen on websites such as Amazon and Headline Publishing, along with Adele’s website and Facebook fan page. It will also be sent to influential bloggers and journalists, as well as being included in Adele’s own newsletter, which goes out to over 5,000 recipients.

Teesside University is particularly special to me Adele, who is a Teesside University honorary graduate, said: ‘Teesside University is particularly special to me, not only because I’m from the area, I’m also the proud recipient of an honorary doctorate. I love being involved in University life.’

Also during her visit Adele launched a short story competition for creative writing students in the School of Arts & Media. Adele has written the beginning of a short story and set the students the challenge of completing it. The winner’s work will be included in a booklet to be given out at Adele’s promotional events across the UK.

She also officially opened The Corner, a dedicated new area on campus for postgraduate students. Adele said: ‘It’s fantastic that postgraduate students have this exclusive space.’

Originally from Eaglescliffe, Adele went from working in advertising to become a top-ten bestseller with her first novel Playing Away. She has gone on to have ten top-ten bestsellers in ten years. One and a half million copies of Adele's books have been sold in the UK and her work is translated into 25 different languages.
