Green campaign has national impact

05 May 2011

Our Students’ Union has received national recognition for its environmental campaign and the way students are encouraged to be environmentally friendly.

It was awarded a silver award in the Green Impact Awards, judged and presented by the National Union of Students Services Limited.

The judges felt the Students’ Union had reached the prestigious silver status for efforts to increase recycling and reduce energy consumption in the workplace. There was also praise for the ongoing Green Tees campaign, which urges students to be more environmentally aware in their daily lives by cycling or using public transport as much as possible, remembering to recycle regularly and trying to avoid wasting energy in their student housing.

Jenny Gill, Campaigns and Welfare Officer at the Students’ Union, led the environmental campaign and was delighted with the Green Impact Award.

She said: ‘We’re all delighted to see the collective efforts of the Students’ Union to go even greener recognised on the national stage. The criteria and assessment for these awards is very demanding and thorough, so a silver is fantastic. ‘It’s clearly vital that big organisations like the Students’ Union are as careful as possible about the impact we’re having on the environment around us and that we also use whatever influence we have with students to encourage them to be more environmentally aware too.

‘We’ll be continuing and stepping up our Green Impact work in the year ahead and I’d love to be celebrating a gold before I leave office next summer.’
