A week of student excellence

Diverse student excellence in design, film, dance and performing arts and creative writing will be on display at Teesside University’s annual creative arts week.

The five-day event will showcase final-year student talent from the University’s School of Arts & Media, and all events are free and open to the general public from Monday 23 May to Friday 27 May.

Martin Pout, Assistant Dean for Marketing & Recruitment in the School of Arts & Media, said: 'This is a fantastic opportunity to come into the University and see some excellent student work. From dance to design, there will be something to inspire everyone.' The week starts with the openings of the separate fine art exhibition and the design exhibition.

Fine art exhibition The fine art exhibition is displayed in the University’s Athena Building off Southfield Road, Middlesbrough and the Constantine Building, off the University’s Main Tower.

It is open to the public from Monday 23 May 2011 from 4.00pm until 8.00pm and from Tuesday 24 to 27 May 2011 10.00am until 4.00pm.

The BA (Hons) Fine Art programme offers specialist expertise in painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and new media.

Design exhibition The design exhibition is displayed in the Athena Building and the Cook Building, behind Borough Road, Middlesbrough.

It is open to the public from Monday 23 May 2011 from 4.00pm until 8.00pm and Tuesday 24 to Friday 27 May, from 10.00am to 4.00pm.

The 2011 design degree show will include final year projects from the following BA (Hons) degrees: Graphic Design, Illustration, Multimedia and Motion Graphics, Product Design, Furniture, Interior Architecture and Interior Design.

Creative writing show Also on Monday 23 May there is a separate event, which is NOT taking place at the University’s main campus in Middlesbrough. Entitled Form at the Forum, this event will feature student work from the MA Creative Writing, taught at the University’s interim campus at The Fairway, Darlington and on the University’s main campus.

This event will take place at The Forum Music Centre, Borough Road, Darlington, from 7.00pm until 11.00pm. It will feature performances by three international poets, Harry Zevenbergen, Kalle Niinikangas and Esa Hirvonen. Jo Colley, a well known UK poet, will also give a reading, along with local writers and Teesside lecturers Bob Beagrie and Andy Willoughby.

Media exhibition The openings of the fine art and design exhibitions and the Form at the Forum will be followed by the media exhibition.

A gala screening of final year student work from the University’s BA (Hons) Media and Television Production degrees will take place on Tuesday 24 May from 5.00pm onwards at Middlesbrough’s Cineworld cinema, off Marton Road, Middlesbrough.

Cabaret of the spoken word On the evening of Wednesday 25 May, the Cabaret of the Spoken Word will take place at the Blue Bar, Albert Road, Middlesbrough, from 7.30pm to 11.00pm.

This annual event will include some of the best live work produced on the poetry and drama modules of the University’s MA Creative Writing with music from two local bands in the interval.

History talks The history section are holding a series of lunch time talks from 12 noon until 1.00pm in M10.14, the tenth floor of the University’s Middlesbrough Tower.

The week will conclude on Thursday 26 May with the performing arts events at 5.00pm and 7.00pm. A promenade dance performance will meet at Athena Building reception, off Southfield Road at 5.00pm and then lead across the campus.

Performing arts show This will be followed by a 7.00pm performance at the new Mercuria Performance Studio, off Woodlands Road, Middlesbrough at 7.00pm. The students are from the University’s two Performing Arts degrees, BA (Hons) Dance and BA (Hons) Performance for Live and Recorded Media and will be showing a selection of highlights from the year. The first cohorts from these two programmes will be graduating this year.
