University nursery children search out ways to help volunteers

Cleveland Search and Rescue Team volunteers visited the University’s Nursery to talk to the children about their work.

The team arrived in a search and rescue vehicle and showed the children some of the vital equipment they use when called out to emergency situations.

The children also took part in a sponsored event in Albert Park, Middlesbrough, to raise funds for the Cleveland Search and Rescue team.

Janet Graham, Nursery Manager, said: 'We decided to have a search and rescue theme for our sponsored event, so used two dolls called Michael and Michaela which the children often take home for the weekend.

'The dolls went ‘missing’ in the park and the children and their parents came to the rescue to find them. After searching most of the park, the dolls were found safe and sound hiding in some bushes.

'We don’t yet know how much has been raised, but we do know that the Search and Rescue Team will be grateful for the donation which will help in some way to support the valuable work that the volunteers do.'

Dave Cammish, of Cleveland Search and Rescue Team, said: 'The children in the nursery were sponsored to raise money for us and we wanted to come in to meet them.

'It’s great to engage with the community and talk about our work and demonstrate what we do. Most people don’t realise the variety of work we do and often assume that all of our work is involved in mountain rescue.

'Although a lot of our work involves searches in rural areas, but we also get call-outs to help in searches for missing people in more urban areas. We are all volunteers and as we have no funding we rely on fundraising to help to support the work we do.'
