Research to benefit society and business

As a leading business-facing University, Teesside can offer research that has a real impact and benefit to business and society.

This message was delivered to almost 200 delegates at Teesside University’s annual research conference.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Henderson CBE, said: ‘Research and enterprise is part of everything we do at Teesside. We are very good at working in partnership and focusing on applied research which is of real use to business and organisations.’

Professor Cliff Hardcastle, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Enterprise) added: ‘Teesside University is a leading business-facing University because business, the public sector and the health sector come to work with us knowing we have leading academics who can translate their research into the benefits business and industry need.’

Professor Zulfiqur Ali, Dean of the Graduate Research School, works to ensure research at Teesside is an integral part of the University and that new research talent is nurtured. ‘Computing, health, social sciences, engineering and history are all areas of significant research strength at Teesside.

‘We will build on these areas, grow and develop them. Some are historical, for example, engineering research reflects the needs of the sector in this area. But others are new such as Teesside leading the field in digital innovation. Marc Cavazza, a professor in the School of Computing is a world leader in the field of interactive story telling.’

Also speaking at the conference was Chris Goulden, Poverty Programme Manager with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. He stressed that JRF was keen to fund research that could demonstrate impact: ‘We always look forward to working with Teesside University and funding research which we believe will have an impact on policy and behaviour.

Other external speakers were Dr John Ridland, European Patent Attorney with Johnson Matthey Catalysts and Stephen Alexander from FP7UK, part of the National Contact Point team for the European Union’s main instrument for funding research in Europe.
