20 October 2011

Choosing Teesside University to study law hit the right chord for family solicitor Lucy Butler

Lucy, 26, from Middlesbrough, graduated with first class LLB (Hons) law degree in 2006, is now working as a family solicitor with Archers Law LLP in Stockton. She is also a keen musician and spends her spare time playing the piano at weddings and various functions at venues across the region, including Hotel Tall Trees in Yarm and Darlington's Rockliffe Hall. Her claim to fame is that she has even played the piano for singer Peter Andre while he was performing at a local venue. Lucy says working towards a law degree at Teesside University helped her to reach a high note in her legal career. She said: 'I always wanted to pursue a law career, practising as a solicitor. When I left Teesside University the careers department were very supportive and with their help I secured an interview at Archers Law LLP.' After completing a two-year training contract with Archers working in different departments within the business, she was offered a permanent post as a family solicitor. She said: 'The training involved working in various units within the firm and I gained a deeper understanding of commercial and private client law.

Opens the door to many careers 'I now work in the family unit and advise clients on divorce, separation, financial matters, pre-nuptial agreements, co-habitation agreements and child related issues. My work is varied and I enjoy assisting clients at difficult times in their lives. It is rewarding to help them move forward and resolve matters.'

Lucy added: 'A law degree opens the door to many careers. The course was excellent. The lecturers were very approachable and supportive. They operate an open door policy and always supported me to achieve my potential.'
