Fantastic February for Teesside University Sports Teams

Teesside University Students’ Union is celebrating a glittering February for sports clubs and teams with four trophies clinched through the month across various sports and more silverware expected before the end of the current season.

The run of success began on the weekend of 11/12 February when the Men’s Gaelic Football Team clinched the British Universities Gaelic Football Championship Plate clocking up five wins from five matches on the way to the trophy culminating in a victory in the final against local rivals the University of Sunderland.

The Badminton Club continued Teesside’s silver streak on 15 February when the Men’s 1st Badminton Team clinched the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Northern league 4B after a 5-3 win over the University of Durham gave them the title with three games to spare, they remain unbeaten with one round of fixtures left and have recorded massive 8-0 wins over Northumbria University and Huddersfield University on the way to the championship.

Wednesday, 29 February then proved to be a leap to triple glory as Men’s Hockey 1st team, who have also enjoyed a sparkling season, clocked up an 8th straight win in the BUCS Northern 5B league to clinch their title with two games to spare. They’ve enjoyed emphatic victories over local rivals along the way including a 7-1 drubbing of the University of York, a 7-2 thumping of the University of Sunderland and a 5-0 thrashing of Northumbria University.

The equally successful Women’s Netball 1st team also secured their Northern 4B league title on the same day with a 9th consecutive victory taking them to 27 points and a massive 194 goal difference for the season. Notable wins included a 59-15 demolition of Leeds Metropolitan University and a 46-19 victory over the University of Sunderland.

Finally, Men’s Football 3rd team won the Northern 6B championship with an away 1-1 draw against York. The draw means that with one game left second placed York cannot overtake Teesside at the top of the table on head to head after the 1-0 home victory in November.

I can’t speak highly enough of all the collective and individual efforts people in all our teams make throughout the year but of course special mention has to go to Men’s Gaelic Football, Badminton, Men’s Hockey, Men’s Football and Women’s Netball. I think it’s also a great testament to our strength in depth that we could be celebrating four or five more league titles before the end of the season and my time in office, well done to everyone and good luck to those with title deciding fixtures still to play over the next few weeks.'
