Finger on the pulse of forensic investigation

Fingerprinting and the role it plays in solving crime will be put in the spotlight by forensic science experts at Teesside University.

The fingerprint identification event is aimed at crime and investigation practitioners, students, academics and adults interested in studying or working in forensic practice.

The aim is to provide an in-depth look at the use of fingerprint techniques in criminal investigations. It will include hands-on practical workshops and a Q&A panel with forensic experts who can answer questions about fingerprints and crime detection.

Brian Rankin, Head of the University’s Centre for Forensic Investigation, said: 'This event will provide an opportunity for visitors to learn more about the latest developments in forensic technology and speak to industry experts.

'It will have wide interest for anyone involved in studying or working in forensics, coinciding with The Fingerprint Society’s international fingerprint week and recent publication of an inquiry report by the Scottish Parliament, which looked at the use of fingerprint evidence in a prosecution case.

'The practical session involving recovery of fingerprints in the University’s vehicle laboratory will also provide a taste of the range of forensic and crime scene courses at the University.'

The fingerprint workshop will allow participants to learn more about what is involved in gathering fingerprints as evidence from a replica crime scene. There will also be an opportunity to visit the University’s crime scene house.

A practitioner session, with short presentations from PhD students, will be followed by a general discussion about how the latest developments in fingerprint research can support practitioners. The event will involve staff from the University’s School of Science & Engineering and School of Social Sciences & Law.
