Teesside lecturer lost for words

A senior lecturer in graphic design at Teesside University will exhibit her work in September at the University’s own Constantine Gallery.

The exhibition, entitled Words Fail Me, will showcase new work by Jo Hamill and will run from Monday 17 September for almost two weeks. Themes connected to language and in particular the written word will be prominent throughout the work on display. Jo’s work challenges the ‘containment’ of words on a page, and the order, structure and conventions they adhere to. Her work disrupts the material qualities of paper through penetrative actions such as a cut, a score, a fold, a scratch or a puncture, in order to frustrate meaning.

Jo said: 'I wanted to explore how much these conventions and structures affect the way we view and ultimately understand the written word and the impact of silencing and suppressing them. When words fail or cannot be found, I’m interested in what remains?'

Words Fail Me will run from 17 – 28 September in the Constantine Gallery, Middlesbrough Tower, just off Borough Road, Middlesbrough. Entry is free, and the gallery will be open Monday – Friday, 10.00am – 4.00pm.
