Teesside graduate lands top journalism award

30 November 2012

A Teesside University graduate has picked up a prestigious journalism award following an exclusive interview with a man whose crimes received world-wide attention.

Dominic Shaw, who completed a BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism Professional Practice in 2010, won the Trainee Award for Top Scoop at the NCTJ Awards for Excellence in Journalism.

Dominic, 23, who joined the Hartlepool Mail as a trainee in September 2010 after graduating, picked up the honour after impressing the judging panel with an exclusive interview with John Darwin, the Hartlepool man who famously faked his own death.

Broadcasting legend Michael Parkinson was the after-dinner speaker at the event, which was held at Nottingham Contemporary.

Dominic, from Middlesbrough, said: 'I was delighted to hear I had been shortlisted for an award at such a high-profile event, so to be told I had won it was a nice surprise.

'It was a fantastic event, and it was an honour to meet Michael Parkinson as well.

'When I left Teesside University I was grateful to get the opportunity to work at the Hartlepool Mail, and I’m thankful to everyone on the course and in the newsroom who has helped me learn about being a reporter over the last couple of years.'

Senior lecturer in Journalism at Teesside University Paul Bailey said: 'We’re all extremely proud of Dominic winning this award. It’s is testament to his hard work and the investment of those who have supported him from his years as a student and to his career now as an award-winning reporter.

'Dominic is fulfilling all the potential we saw in him as a student. We know that from recent figures that our NCTJ-accredited Multimedia Journalism degree is one of the best in the country and continues to produce industry-standard reporters and so we are delighted to see graduates such as Dominic become rising stars in the media.'
