Students pocket cash prizes through survey

06 June 2013

Completing a survey about their time at Teesside University has left four lucky students very satisfied with the result.

As part of the promotion of the National Student Survey (NSS), Teesside University offered four cash prizes in a draw for students who completed the survey.

Megan Tuthill, 22, of Washington, Tyne and Wear, won this year’s top prize of £500. The final year BA (Hons) Information and Communication Technologies student said: 'It’s a great opportunity for students’ voices to be heard.

'When I was looking at universities I looked at the results from previous surveys and when I came to the open day at Teesside University I found what the School of Computing had on offer was the best I’d seen.'

The £250 second prize went to BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism Professional Practice student Natalie Seddon, 21, of Hull, while two third place prizes of £100 went to Mathew Bliss, BA (Hons) Computer Games Animation and Jessica Potts, 22, of York, a final year BA (Hons) Media Studies student.

Mathew 22, from Leicester, said: 'The NSS is important as it lets prospective students know what current students have to say about where they’re studying. It’s good for the universities as well to gauge what they’re doing right and what needs improvement.'

He is planning to use his prize money to help further his study, adding: 'I’m glad I won. The prize money will go to help pay for my master’s degree.'

Results from the 2012 National Student Survey showed that students rate Teesside University very highly, with Diagnostic Radiography students being among the most satisfied in the UK, giving Teesside University a score of 100%.

Professor Eileen Martin, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Student Experience) at Teesside University, said: 'Teesside University is committed to providing students with an excellent experience.

'The National Student Survey is one of a number of measures that we can reflect on as a University to support our ongoing ambitions to enhance the experience we offer to all our students.

'It is also serves as a helpful reference for prospective students when making their choice of universities, alongside our website, prospectus and open days.'
