Student receives inaugural Transporter anniversary award

Teesside University Civil Engineering graduate Stephen Brown received the inaugural Tees Transporter Bridge Anniversary Award at a recent ceremony.

The Tees Transporter Bridge Anniversary Award was developed as part of the Bridge's Heritage Lottery Fund-supported Visitor Experience Project in partnership with the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) and Teesside University.

Stephen achieved a first class honours degree and was chosen as the first winner of the annual award in recognition of the high degree of innovation in the design and implementation of his final year laboratory experimental project.

Sally Herbert, Chairman of the North East Branch of the CIHT, presented Stephen with his award at a recent ceremony at the Transporter Bridge Visitor Centre. The event also included a talk on the history of the bridge by Bridge Master Alan Murray and Principal Engineer Rodger Wakerley, as well as a tour of the site by Bridge staff.

Dr Steve Bloomer, Subject Group Leader at Teesside University, said: 'The inauguration of the Tees Transporter Bridge Anniversary Award affirms the University’s strong links to professional bodies and local organisations and is a fantastic way of recognising the skills exhibited by our students.

'Stephen’s work on the problem of settlement when building new structures was a technically strong piece of work that has relevance to the construction industry.'

The Tees Transporter Bridge Anniversary Award is one of a number of education and learning link-ups recently developed as a part of the £2.6m Heritage Lottery Fund supported renovation and activity.

The Bridge has also worked on projects with the ICE, Middlesbrough College, Trinity Catholic College and the Children’s University in recent months.
