Major grant awarded for Heritage research

17 October 2013

Teesside University is part of a research consortium which has been awarded more than £1.8 million in funding to support dozens of PhD studentships.

The funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) has been awarded to the Heritage Consortium of which Teesside is a member.

It equates to approximately 26 fully-funded PhD studentships, which will be shared among the Consortium’s seven member universities.

All seven have also pledged considerable matched funding, increasing the overall number of awards by up to 14. In addition, each member organisation will fund one Master’s studentship every year for the five years of the AHRC award.

The Heritage Consortium is led by the University of Hull, in collaboration with Teesside University, Bradford University, Huddersfield University, Leeds Metropolitan University, Northumbria University and Sheffield Hallam University.

Professor Rick Rylance, Chief Executive of the AHRC, said: 'This is an important step forward in delivering the best possible training and support for postgraduate students in the arts and humanities, and in developing a collaborative approach which pools expertise and expands horizons for postgraduate researchers. 'We are delighted at how the sector, and partners beyond the sector, have responded, and we look forward to working closely with them to support the next generation.'

The History department at Teesside University contributed expertise in regional and local history. Other members of the consortium contributed strengths in fields such as archaeological sciences, conservation and community empowerment.

The studentship awards will also include placement opportunities with an extensive range of partner heritage organisations; including Iziko Museums of South Africa, the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation, and the International Slavery Museum.

Professor Nigel Copsey, from Teesside’s History department, said: 'This is a really prestigious award that recognises our consortium as a leading provider of doctoral-level education in the heritage sector.'
