New express route to learning

28 October 2013

A new walking and cycle route is now complete linking Teesside University Darlington and Darlington College to Bank Top Station.

With ample lighting, the new route makes it easier, safer and faster for pedestrians and cyclists to access both the College and University campuses from the Yarm Road direction via Peel Road.

Vice-Chancellor of Teesside University Professor Graham Henderson CBE DL said: 'This new route for pedestrians and cyclists is another step along the way in the redevelopment of Central Park. It opens up direct access to and from Darlington station which will be vital as we welcome visitors to Teesside University and the other exciting new initiatives that will see this area transformed into a key learning, research and business hub.'

Tim Grant, Principal of Darlington College, added 'The new path will make the campus safer and more accessible for students, staff and the community, and plays a key part in the shared vision for this area of Darlington.'

Councillor Andy Scott, Darlington Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, said: 'With a recommended 150 minutes of activity per week for adults, it can often seem difficult to fit that into your working week. The new cycle route is a great facility which will encourage more students and staff to consider walking and cycling to the College and University campuses and clock up some of those vital active minutes which will help to keep hearts healthy and reduce stress levels.'

Councillor Lyonette, Darlington Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, said: 'We are continuing to improve the infrastructure for sustainable transport such as walking and cycling in Darlington. The new route is a great addition to the routes we already have around town. This new link between the station and the campuses should make it even easier for students and staff to leave the car at home and travel to the campuses sustainably.'
