University exhibition helps land Dave his dream job

25 November 2013

Showcasing his work at Teesside University’s exhibition of outstanding computing innovation, technology and design ExpoTees gave Dave Norman a helping hand up the career ladder.

Having worked in specialist areas of IT for a number of years Dave decided to return to study to update and widen his skillset. He chose Teesside University because of its warm welcome and strong academic team, Dave said, 'Teesside is my local university and when I initially started looking for a course here I received a great welcome and got to speak easily to all the right people.' Having graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Computing Dave is already putting his new found knowledge into practice, working as an ICT Services Officer at Cleveland Fire Brigade. 'Being a mature student the help and support I received was excellent and staff from the School made it really easy to meet similar students to me,' said Dave. 'For me the best bit about my course was having academic staff who have come from and, are still very much involved in industry, it allowed them to use their networks and invite guest experts to give talks and lectures. 'Outside of the lectures, I found it easy to settle into student life and met many lifelong friends. I also took time to try new sporting activities; Teesside University has a real gem with its Sport and Wellbeing facilities and Staff.' Since completing his course Dave has lots of special memories to reflect on from his time at Teesside 'I have made many lasting friendships from people I met throughout my time at Teesside University but two of my most lasting memories are the opportunity to exhibit at ExpoTees and without a doubt the chance to undertake the winter skills course with the climbing club in the beautiful Cairngorms.' Speaking about his future career, Dave added 'My choice of course and experience at the University has had a big impact on my career with the brigade so far. I am able to apply some of my forensic skills to tasks I undertake and the advanced modules from my final year allow me to have a much deeper understanding of infrastructure.'
