Study leads Lee to a rewarding profession

02 December 2013

Studying at Teesside University is what Lee Lax says helped him to pursue a career in a rewarding profession.

Lee, 25, from Redcar, is working as a staff nurse at James Cook University Hospital, having completed the Adult Nursing Diploma at Teesside University.

He said: 'My role as a staff nurse includes managing patients back to health and administering necessary medications and interventions. I also work with teams of healthcare assistants, doctors and consultants to help with patient recovery.'

Lee added: 'The three-year adult nursing diploma at Teesside University really helped to prepare me for this job through frequent placements on hospital wards and community areas.

'These placements gave me confidence and support, along with the ability in the third year to manage my own caseload of patients.'

During the course Lee completed placements at various wards and the HDU (high dependency unit) at James Cook University Hospital, along with community placements in Eston.

He said: 'I always wanted to better myself and work in a rewarding profession. Teesside was the ideal place to study as it was local and it was also able to help me work towards a career which I could be proud of.

'The support from lecturers and staff on the various placements was the best part of the course. I really enjoyed the practice modules and workshops, due to their relation to actual nursing practice.

'The campus has great facilities, from the equipment we used during our degree to the coffee bars and places to eat around the University.'

He added: 'During the course I was involved in the buddy scheme, which helped me to develop skills in mentoring other students. I would definitely recommend the course due to the amount of support I received.

'Since qualifying, I’ve been working as a staff nurse in an orthopaedic ward at the hospital. The course really helped me to secure this job as the placements helped to see which area of nursing I wanted to work in.'
