School teacher Abigail took studying in her stride

03 December 2013

Studying at Teesside University was a step in the right direction for dance teacher Abigail Skillen.

Abigail graduates from the PGCE (postgraduate certificate in education) having completed the BA (Hons) Dance at Teesside University the previous year. She is now working full-time as a dance teacher at Redcar Academy.

Originally from Cumbria and now living in Saltburn, Abigail, said: 'My current role involves teaching at the secondary school and I’m also a form tutor.'

Abigial, 23, added: 'I really wanted to come to Teesside to study dance as the course was so different to others in that the focus wasn’t purely on performance, it also looked at the many different types of jobs and roles involves in dance.

'One of my favourite parts of the degree was working on placement, including a placement at Redcar Academy and another at a dance school in Leeds. I also taught and was chairman of the dance club at the University.

'I really enjoyed the dance for the camera module during the degree, as it really helped to give me ideas about what I wanted to do as a career and look at all aspects of dance, alongside performing.

'I really wanted to keep my options open during the degree, which was great as it looked at all the different aspects of working in dance and I decided to progress to the PGCE as I became really interested in teaching dance. It was a natural progression continuing the teaching qualification at Teesside University, I really wanted to continue my education there.

'I would definitely recommend Teesside University as a place to study and it's all really compact, with everything together in one place. I’ve made some lifelong friends.

'The facilities at Teesside University were great, from the performance spaces to the editing facilities when working on videos as part of our performances.'
