Radio presenter shares insight with student journalists

24 January 2014

National radio journalist Anna Foster shared some insight into the media industry with fledging reporters at Teesside University.

Anna, a presenter with BBC Radio 5 Live, has broadcast from Iraq and Afghanistan and covered major stories across the UK.

During her visit to the University Anna gave a talk to an audience of students from the BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism, speaking about her route into the industry, her career highlights while working as a journalist and how she follows up stories in her current role.

Anna, who is originally from South Shields, said: 'It's great to be able to meet students working towards a career in journalism and it’s great to be able to inspire and share insight into the profession.'

Rebecca Lawrence, who edits the University’s student newspaper T-side, said: 'It's important for us to be able to meet and speak to journalists already working in the industry as it is inspiring.

'Anna was able to talk to us about her work, how she started off as a journalist and she offered us tips on working in journalism.'

Rebecca, 20, of Redcar, who has completed work placement at local newspapers and radio stations, added: 'The degree at Teesside covers all aspects of journalism on every different platform, from print to radio, television and online.

'The role of the journalist is constantly changing and this degree course helps us to ensure we have the skills needed to succeed.'

Also in the audience was Sam Howitt, 20, of Swindon, who said: 'I moved to Teesside solely for the multimedia journalism course. It’s really good for us to be able to get insight in to the industry from journalists already doing the job.'

Paul Bailey, Senior Lecturer in Journalism, said: 'Anna is originally from the North East and it's great that she has been able to provide our multimedia journalism students with an inside view of what it's like to work in national radio.'
