'Excellent' rating for health profession programmes at Teesside

07 April 2000

The University of Teesside has been found to have excellent educational programmes in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Diagnostic Radiography/Medical Ultrasound following a detailed review by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education.

The news comes hot on the heels of a similar 'Excellent' outcome that the University's School of Health received for its Nursing provision in March.

Teesside scored an overall mark of 22 out of 24 for its Professions Allied to Medicine courses (Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Diagnostic Radiography/Medical Ultrasound). It got the maximum 4 out of 4 for Curriculum Design Content & Organisation; Learning Resources; Student Support & Guidance; and Quality Management & Evaluation; and 3 out of 4 for Teaching Learning & Assessment and Student Progression & Achievement.

Professor Graham Henderson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Development) said: "This is an outstanding result for both the School of Health and the University of Teesside. Based on objective, external peer review, the QAA assessment demonstrates that we combine access and quality with vocational programmes serving the needs of the region."

Dr Mike Holmes, Director of the School of Health, said: "This result confirms the progress made in the quality of the delivery of our expanding portfolio of programmes. Taken together with the recent successful Nursing, Midwifery and Health Sciences review, the vast majority of the School's provision is now rated in the highest category.

"This is a tribute to the effort and commitment of so many staff - academic, administrative and technical - within the School and to the support of colleagues in the wider University and our partner health organisations. With such a strong external endorsement from QAA, we should view the future with confidence in the knowledge that we have enhanced quality while continuing to innovate."
