Sports therapy students get it taped

14 March 2014

Sports therapy students at Teesside University are the first in the UK to complete Kinesio Taping studies within a degree course.

The introductory Kinesio course was launched to second year sports therapy students and an intermediate course for third years will be available from October.

This will allow Teesside students to become qualified KT practitioners, as well as qualified sports therapists at the end of their studies. Kinesio Taping is brightly coloured or black stretchy taping often seen on sporting celebrities.

The taping can help with sports injuries, muscular complaints, swelling and joint pain in all ages.

Gwen Dalgleish, Senior Lecturer in Sports Therapy, said: 'It makes total sense to incorporate the Kinesio courses into our Sport Therapy BSc course at Teesside University as it will not only enhance the student experience but also employability of our graduates.

'Our students are delighted to have the opportunity to learn Kinesio Taping techniques on this course and feel it will be a great asset for their curriculum vitae on graduation.'

Kevin Anderson, Managing Director of Kinesio UK, added: 'You can rarely watch an international sporting event now without seeing Kinesio Tape, and it is now also being used by the NHS for a variety of different conditions.

'Kinesio Tape’s effectiveness is greatly influenced by how it is actually applied, so allowing BSc Sports Therapy students to study the Kinesio Taping techniques is offering them exactly the skills they need in the 2014 workplace.'
