Showcase of digital expertise and innovation

24 April 2014

Digital expertise and innovation will be showcased at Teesside University’s annual ExpoTees event, which this year runs over two days and has an international flavour.

ExpoTees, now in its ninth year, showcases the work of the University’s School of Computing students while bringing these future graduates together with prospective employers to talk about their projects.

Attracting guests from industry, education and business, this interactive exhibition is also a must-see for anyone with an interest in emerging technology in computer science, digital media and web, games and animation.

And for the first time, a student from Botswana and another from Prague have been invited to exhibit their work, after being selected to get involved in ExpoTees. Both are completing courses accredited by Teesside University, one at Botho College in Botswana and another at Prague College in the Czech Republic.

Also due to attend is Jaime Torres, Director of ESAT School of Art and Technology in Valencia, Spain, which also delivers Teesside University’s School of Computing courses.

Younger students are also getting involved through NextGen, which involves pupils from schools across the region being set a challenge in the run-up to ExpoTees.

Teams from each school are working on projects to create something to help their generation, such as an innovative game, animation, website or mobile phone app linked to issues affecting people in their age group.

Jo Noble, ExpoTees organiser and Senior Lecturer in Computing, said: 'We're asking them to be as creative as they want with their ideas, which could involve something which doesn’t even exist yet.'

ExpoTees will be held at the University’s Darlington campus on Wednesday 14 May and Thursday 15 May, 1.00pm to 5.00pm.

Jo added: 'ExpoTees has been running for nine years and continues to grow. It's gone from being held over one day, to this year’s event over two days with around 200 exhibits. We've had to grow as the students’ work continues to excel.'

Past graduates have gone on to work on award-winning film and game titles, securing employment with companies who initially saw their work at ExpoTees.

The first day of ExpoTees will focus on computer science, digital media and web. Student work can be seen alongside interactive and experimental exhibits using Arduino, robotics, augmented reality and virtual reality.

The second day will focus on games and animation, celebrating work which demonstrates creativity, imagination and industry-standard skills from students on the University’s CreativeSkillset accredited courses. The games lounge enables visitors to play titles produced by students, while a cinema shows students’ short films.

The ExpoTees Awards will be the grand finale to the exhibition, taking place from 6.00pm to 7.00pm on the final day, with students competing for an ExpoTees trophy and prize.
