Anna hosts Autism's Got Talent

14 May 2014

Teesside University honorary graduate Anna Kennedy OBE has hosted a showcase for talented adults and children with autism.

Autism’s Got Talent was organised by the autism charity Anna Kennedy Online, and took place at London’s Mermaid Theatre. The performers, which consisted of singers, gymnasts, actors, musicians and dance troupes, all have autism and Asperger’s syndrome.

The annual event is growing in popularity each year. Supported by celebrities including Carrie and David Grant, Lennox Lewis, Debbie Moore OBE, Dr Pam Spurr, Dawn Lowe and Steve Hewlett, Autism’s Got Talent provides an important opportunity to showcase the capabilities of people with autism. Anna, who received a Doctorate in Professional Achievement from Teesside University in 2013, said: 'Autism is often shrouded with negativity and negative press. Autism’s Got Talent provides a platform and great opportunity to disprove this, and replace it with hope, fun, laughter and positivity.

'All the acts involved are extremely talented and this event provides them with an environment in which they can express themselves, make new friends and meet people from around the UK. It also boosts confidence and social skills, and creates new friendships for both adults and children.

'There were several emotional moments throughout the day and evening of the performances.'

Acts travelled from all over the UK to perform at the event and social media enabled people who could not attend to interact and join the celebration.

Anna added: 'The essence of the event was extended to social media, with people networking, meeting new friends and sharing their experiences. It really bought people together, and everyone shared in the celebrations and congratulations. I really am looking forward to making next year’s event bigger and better.'
