Dance student's journey from Malaysia to Teesside

19 May 2014

A third year dance student who came to study at Teesside from Malaysia is set to celebrate completing her degree with a special performance as part of Creative Teesside.

Huey Teng is one of a number of students who will showcase work as part of the annual event which celebrates the dedication and hard work of those working towards degrees in the School of Arts & Media.

Her final creative project is a choreographed multimedia solo performance exploring the technique of Chinese martial arts and contemporary dance. Huey has worked with computer animation and design students to put together this unique performance, using projections, dance and animation.

Huey, who came to Teesside to study BA (Hons) Dance in 2011, said: 'I enjoyed every single aspect of my three years at Teesside and have gained a lot of knowledge and experience during my time here.

'I have been given wonderful opportunities, like volunteering at the Billingham International Dance Festival last year. I think opportunities like these, and Creative Teesside, are important to showcase students’ work, so that we can receive feedback from audiences.'

Huey will be performing at the Hazel Pearson Theatre, at Middlesbrough College, at 7.00pm on Tuesday 27 May. She will be joining other students who will be staging dance, multimedia and performance pieces as part of their third year final projects.

An array of events and exhibitions will be held from Tuesday 27 May to Friday 30 May to showcase the work of students completing degrees in Design, English, Fine Art, History, Media and Performing Arts.

This year the event is being opened by University honorary graduate and Director of Design at Aston Martin, Marek Riechman. He will be on hand to open the Art and Design show on Tuesday 27 May in the Athena building.

Professor Gerda Roper, Dean of the School of Arts & Media, said: 'Creative Teesside is an opportunity to celebrate the fantastic work of our final year students.

'They show a great amount of dedication and this event provides them with a platform to showcase their work and celebrate their achievements.'
