Channel 4 comes to Teesside to support budding media stars

07 August 2014

Channel 4’s award winning talent scheme 4Talent is coming to Teesside University, as the initiative continues its journey across the UK supporting young people looking to break into the media industry.

The University’s School of Arts & Media will host the event in partnership with Channel 4 on Friday 15 August.

Working closely with the local creative industry, this free event will offer 16 to 25 year olds, keen to learn about working in the media, an opportunity to network with professionals, take part in workshops and gain an insight into the routes through to work experience placements.

BBC presenter Trai Anfield and Ben Young, creative producer of Third Films and media lecturer at Teesside University, will present their industry expertise and experience on the day.

The 4Talent event will include masterclasses looking at journalism in the digital age with Jules McCarthy of BBC News, special effects filming with Rad Miller of Pocket Projects and factual productions with BBC presenter Trai Anfield, along with sessions on pitching for television and working in animation. Diane Herbert, Channel 4’s Director of Human Resources said: 'The creative industries have huge potential to provide growth and employment and we want to make sure nobody is excluded from that. We have taken our 4Talent Days to many places around the UK in search of new talent and are delighted to be in Middlesbrough.'

Martin Pout, Assistant Dean (Recruitment), Teesside University School of Arts & Media, said: 'We're looking forward to welcoming Channel 4 to Teesside University, where we’re hoping many of our talented students can gain insight into a career in the media industry.

'We already offer our students use of industry-standard production kit, along with a digital news studio and purpose-built, convergent newsroom and many of our academic staff have media industry backgrounds, who already ensure our students develop the essential skills, knowledge and confidence for a career in the media, communications and cultural industries. But it’s great too for our students to be able to be involved in events such as 4Talent, as nothing beats speaking to industry professionals who can provide key insight into how the industry works.'

By demystifying the media sector, 4Talent aims to help young people navigate their way into a hugely competitive industry. 4Talent’s approach reflects Channel 4’s mission to break down barriers and engage with and develop the widest range of talent.
