Postgraduate study was the key to entrepreneur’s success

08 September 2014

A business leader has said that postgraduate study at Teesside University was the key to his success.

Bryan Bunn, the Managing Director of Nortech Solutions at Wynyard on Teesside, said that studying for an MBA gave him the confidence and ability to start his own firm.

Since founding Nortech in 2011 with only four people, the firm which specialises in engineering design, project and construction management assistance services to the process, petrochemical, iron and steel industries, has grown rapidly with several international clients and employs more than 80 people.

Bryan now has several Nortech employees enrolled on courses at Teesside University in order to maximise the skills of his workforce.

Teesside University is holding an open day on Thursday 11 September for anybody interested in studying postgraduate and part-time courses.

Bryan, who left school at 16 to work as an apprentice engineer, said that a move from an engineering background to a management role prompted him to study for the MBA.

He said: 'I had lots of engineering experience but no management qualifications so decided to enrol on the MBA.

'Studying for the MBA was hard work at first. We had a small child at the time and I was having to stay up late and get up early.

'But it was a fantastic experience, I felt like I was qualified to talk up to more senior people.

'Ultimately it helped give me the confidence to set up on my own.

'I’ve now got five staff enrolled on a variety of different courses at the University. Teesside has a great heritage of engineering and industry and Teesside University is helping to ensure that we retain those skills.'

The postgraduate and part-time open day takes place at Teesside University’s Middlesbrough campus on Thursday, 11 September from 2.00pm to 7.00pm. The event will give prospective students the chance to meet with subject specialists and get all the information they need to know about the courses and the fantastic facilities on offer at Teesside University.

They can also discuss individual requirements and ask any specific questions which they might have.
